Old Gold 16U Tryouts Set For This Saturday

Old Gold will conduct tryouts for their 16-U travel team this Saturday, March 11 from 12:00-2:30 p.m. at Rainbow Beach.

Rainbow Beach is located at 3111 East 77th street in Chicago.

The tryout fee is $15.

Bolingbrook, West Aurora, Joliet West, Joliet Central Set For Lincoln-Way East Sectional

Tues., March 7 at 7:00 p.m. Bolingbrook (27-1) vs. West Aurora (21-8)
Wed., March 8 at 7:00 p.m. Joliet West (25-3) vs. Joliet Central (23-5)

Bolingbrook and West Aurora will battle in the first semifinal. Nana Akenten (Nebraska), Malik Binns and Kaleb Thornton lead the way for Bolingbrook, a team that spent a good part of the season ranked #1. 6’3 junior wing Camron Donatlan leads the way for West Aurora which also gets good production from senior DaVion Cross.

Joliet West and Joliet Central will tangle in the second semifinal in a rematch of a February 17th contest won 51-49 by West. West is led by their senior Division I duo of Teyvion Kirk and Tre Bell (Green Bay). Central counters with a lineup led by senior guard Jose Grubbs and senior Jason Bingham, who can put points on the board. Central will need to keep the West seniors Tabyous Casterberry and Elijah Ward off the glass.

Winners will play for the Lincoln-Way East sectional title on Friday night.

Curie, OPRF, Whitney Young, Kenwood Set For 4A Proviso East Sectional

4A Proviso East Sectional
Tues., March 7 at 7:00 p.m. Chicago Curie (25-3) vs. Oak Park-River Forest (23-6)
Wed., March 8 at 7:00 p.m. Chicago Whitney Young (22-7) vs. Chicago Kenwood (21-7)

Curie and Oak Park-River Forest will square off in the first semifinal. Elijah Joiner (Tulsa) and Allante Pickens bring plenty of experience and offensive firepower for Curie. OPRF counters will their versatile forward duo of Jared Scott and Cameron Gross. OPRF is riding a 10-game winning streak.

Whitney Young and Kenwood will meet in the second semifinal. Lucas Williamson and Javon Freeman have evolved into a formidable offensive duo for Whitney Young. Kenwood has veteran Manny Patterson anchoring the post with senior guard Octavius Parker leading a team with a wide array of weapons. Kenwood an early season battle against Whitney Young at the Chicago Elite Class in December.

Winners will meet on Friday night for the Proviso East sectional title game.

DePaul Attendance Plummets Ahead Of Moving Into New Arena

Here is an article from Danny Ecker of Crain’s Chicago detailing DePaul’s shrinking attendance numbers as the team prepares to move into their new 10,000 seat, $164 million downtown arena.

DePaul drew fewer than 1,000 fans on 7 different occasions this year. In 2 of those games fewer than 600 fans were in attendance. DePaul averaged 1,824 fans per game for 14 home dates this season, which is down 24% from last year.

A study done ahead of the arena being built said that the team would need to average 9,500 fans per game for 16 home dates to break even. DePaul is expected to account for 40% of the annual attendance at the venue.

Simeon, Marist, Brother Rice and Thornton Set For 4A Thornwood Sectional

Tues., 7:00 p.m. Chicago Simeon vs. Chicago Marist
Wed., 7:00 p.m. Chicago Brother Rice vs. Thornton Township

Simeon will face Marist in the first semifinal. Simeon defeated Marian Catholic to advance while Marist knocked off T.F. North.

Simeon’s Evan Gilyard (UTEP) will matchup against Marist junior point guard Maurice Commander in a stellar battle of floor leaders. Commander scored 32 points against T.F. North. The game could be won inside at the rim where 6’9 Marist post Justin Brown will try to hold off the Simeon frontcourt.

Brother Rice and Thornton will lock up in the second semifinal. Brother Rice beat Homewood-Flossmoor to advance while Thornton knocked off Bloom Township.

Electric Thornton point guard Alonzo Verge, fresh off of scoring 43 points against Bloom, will look to push his team past a strong Brother Rice squad that features their high-scoring guard duo of Mike Shepski and Josh Niego.

Winners will play on Friday night for the Thornwood sectional title.
