Simeon Defeats Morgan Park 68-64 To Win City Title

Simeon defeated Morgan Park 68-64 to win the City title in an action-packed All-Red-South final on Sunday night.

Simeon led 24-16 at the end of the 1st quarter. Morgan Park rallied and took a 34-30 lead into halftime. The game went back and forth the rest of the way.

Morgan Park led 64-63 with 1:14 to play, and had the ball ahead of Simeon coming up big on defense and then taking a 65-64 lead 48 seconds to play on a Messiah Jones tip-in.

A pair of Evan Gilyard (UTEP) free throws put Simeon up 67-64 just ahead of Ayo Dosunmu coming up a bit short on a game-tying three-point attempt.

Junior guard Kezo Brown was outstanding en route to scoring a game-high 26 points. Gilyard backed up Brown with 18 points including 10 in the fourth quarter. Talen Horton-Tucker added 13 points and 11 rebounds.

Ayo Dosunmu led Morgan Park with 16 points. He was backed up by 15 points each from Melo Burrell and Lenell Henry. Burrell also grabbed 10 rebounds.

Top-Ranked Bolingbrook Falls To Lincoln-Way East

Bolingbrook lost to Lincoln-Way East 65-62 on Friday night knocking the top-ranked team in Illinois from the ranks of the unbeaten.

The game was tied at 43 at the end of three quarters ahead of Lincoln-Way East leading by as many as 14 points, and holding a 57-46 lead with 3:58 to play ahead of a furious rally by Bolingbrook that ended with missed three-point shot that would have sent the game to overtime.

Junior Sam Shafer led the way for Lincoln-Way East with 30 points continuing his strong play.

Bolingbrook falls to 23-1 on the season. Lincoln-Way west improves to 18-10.



Chicago Public League Playoffs Semifinal Match-Ups Set

The match-ups are now set for the semifinal round of the Chicago Public League Playoffs this Friday at Chicago State.

Public League heavyweights Whitney Young and Simeon will battle in one semifinal, with fellow heavyweights Morgan Park and Curie locking up in the other. Whitney Young advanced with a win over Kenwood while Simeon defeated Farragut to advance.

Simeon will send Evan Gilyard (UTEP), Talen Horton-Tucker and Kezo Brown in to oppose Whitney Young’s Xavier Castaneda, Lucas Williamson and Javon Freeman.

Ayo Dosunmu of Morgan Park and Elijah Joiner (Tulsa) of Curie will line up opposite of one another in the other semifinal in a highly enticing backcourt match-up. Morgan Park defeated North Lawndale to advance while Curie held off Orr.

Catholic League Tournament Semifinals Now Set

The semifinal match-ups are now set for the Chicago Catholic League Tournament.

Ramar Evans and Loyola will battle Jamal Nixon, Jacob Keller, D.J. Steward and Fenwick in the first game. Mike Shepski and Brother Rice will take on Marquise Walker and St. Joseph in the second contest.

Games will take place at Fenwick

5:30 p.m. Fenwick vs. Loyola
7:00 p.m. Brother Rice vs. St. Joseph

St. Joseph Legend Gene Pingatore Records Career Win Number 1,000

Legendary St. Joseph head coach Gene Pingatore earned his 1,000 career win as a head coach on Saturday when his team defeated Chicago St. Rita to advance to the quarterfinals of the Chicago Catholic League Tournament.

Pingatore is in his 48th year at St. Joseph.

Pingatore now holds a career record of 100-373.

St. Joseph has won 2 state titles under Pingatore as well as 13 sectional titles and 32 regional titles.
